Influence

Click here to return to the Vampire: the Masquerade landing page.

Rolls: Charisma or Manipulation + Influence dots in the sphere being used.

  • Difficulty: Your difficulty starts at 10 and is reduced by the dots you have in either Charisma, Manipulation or Influence, whichever is higher. For example: Bob has a Charisma of 4 and an Influence (Church) of 3. His Difficulty is 10 - 4 (his Charisma) = Difficulty 6. Brian has Manipulation 4 and Influence (Industry) 5. His Difficulty is 10 - 5 (his Influence) = Difficulty 5.

  • Modifiers: Sometimes a player may either use the 'pooled background' option (explained on page 119) or any Allies or Contacts that are associated with the sphere of Influence you're using. Example: Bob has an Allie in the local newspaper, and he wants to use Influence (Media) to keep a story from being printed in the newspaper. He may subtract 1 from the difficulty because of this valued Allie.

  • Effects: The list below is by no means exhaustive. It is a guideline so that players will have an idea of what various levels of influence in certain spheres may allow.

  • Extended Rolls: Each roll consumes another Use (or "Action," please see Uses per Month below for more information).

  • Botches: You cannot Botch an Influence roll. You either Succeed or Fail.

  • Uses per Month: Within a month a player may only use so many actions as they have in that particular sphere. A player with Underworld 3 may only use that Influence 3 times in one month.

  • Usage Resets: Uses reset on the 1st of each month. Players wanting to use their Influence should send an e-mail to me at vampire (at) woddenver (dot) com.

  • When sending your Influence requests use the following format:

Subject: (Character name) - Influence Usage

Body: My character Bob wants to use his Influence (High Society) to get a special viewing to the art gallery. (Rolls included. They must be witnessed.)

Blanket Usage

A player may wish to use their Influence to 'cover' one sphere. To do this the player must have at least 4 dots in the sphere and a Charisma or Manipulation of 3. The player must spend at least 3 dots in that sphere per month. They will have to roll monthly to keep their hold over a sphere of influence and during that time they can be challenged by other players to either 'take' the Influence from them or to break their stranglehold on it for just a month. To do this a player must have: an amount of that particular sphere equal to or greater than the amount the character they are challenging is spending for that month and the total sum of that sphere of Influence + Charisma (or Manipulation) must be equal to or greater than the character they are challenging.

Allies specific to this field can add into your total for this purpose.

System: The defender has spent a total of 4 dots in the Influence (Health) + 4 dots of Manipulation + 2 Allies who work in the ER at a local hospital. This gives them a total pool of 10 points. The challenger has 4 dots in Influence (Health) + 4 dots of Charisma + 3 Allies who work as nurses in various hospitals and the PR representative for one hospital in particular giving him a total of 11. The defender makes their monthly Influence roll for the month, they want to continue to keep their blanket hold over the local hospitals. They receive 3 successes. The challenger then will roll and they receive 4 successes. The defender will lose their blanket hold over the hospitals in Denver, leaving the challenger to control that sector of the city's Influence for the next 30 days.

Remember:

  • You can pool your influence in order to challenge another player for their hold on a sphere.

  • You must spend at least 3 dots in a sphere to keep a hold on it.

  • The dots that must be spent to control one sphere are effectively gone and unavailable to you for the month.
